Colored polyurethanes containing azo disperse dye moieties were synthesized to achieve improved colorfastness properties. Polyurethanes for textile materials are mainly synthesized through step-growth polymerization by reacting methylene diphenyl diisocyanate with polytetramethyleneglycol, followed by chain extension. In this study, a certain amount of polytetramethyleneglycol was substituted with benzothiazole or thiazole-based azo disperse dyes containing two hydroxyl groups to synthesize colored polyurethanes. The colored polyurethanes showed higher viscosity and tensile properties compared with virgin polyurethanes. The color properties of colored polyurethanes showed a similar trend with the spectral properties of the azo disperse dyes linked in their backbone.
